Pleased to meet you!

Whether you are an established or aspiring magician, or if you just simply love the illusionary arts, joining the club can be an incredible experience! From meeting like-minded people, to experience some of the best lectures in the world live, there is a host of benefits and a world of excitement ahead!

Joining the club: What to expect

As members of The Victoria Magic Circle, we enjoy great camaraderie, participation, performance and volunteerism at meetings and shows, great learning (and reduced fees) at the Meetings, Round Tables and Magic Lectures we host, the privilege to use a great magic lending library (books, videos and DVDs).

Connect with us to find our meeting dates and locations - we typically welcome everyone over 16 years of age to experience the "after business" portion of the meeting. Under a current member's sponsorship, you will be welcomed to three meetings, after which the club will seek to vote you in as a full member!

Full membership comes with many privileges and responsibilities. You will be expected to assist with the club's activities in various ways - this is not a passive membership, but an active group engagement! You will receive access to the world-class lectures, our substantial library, the members knowledge, a mentorship program, practice and performance times, as well as the literal life-long friendships that are established here!

Once you are voted in as an Interim Member you will be given your Member Package, which among other things includes an application to join the International Brotherhood of Magicians (IBM), which we are a part of. You can also find the IBM Application Form on the IBM Website, www.magician.org. You must join the IBM within six months in order to complete your VMC registration process.

The International Brotherhood of Magicians is a worldwide magic club with a rich history, a strong Magic Ethics Code, and more than 300 Rings in more than 73 countries. With IBM membership you will receive monthly editions of the magician’s magazine, ‘The Linking Ring’. The Linking Ring Magazine has articles about magic, magicians and conferences around the world, and is a great magician’s resource (please note, you may opt out of receiving the magazine for a reduced membership fee). As an IBM Member, you will be welcomed at any IBM Ring Meeting world wide. Please visit the IBM website, www.magician.org for more information.

Joining the Junior club: Magic starts at a young age!

The Victoria Magic Circle’s Junior Magic Club is open to magic enthusiasts from age 10 and over. The club is led by club members of the Victoria Magic Circle, and usually meets one weekend afternoon a month (depending on meeting space) The instructors will work with the students on a variety of magic skills throughout the year beginning with the basics and building on these as we go.

Topics could include coin sleights, card techniques, parlour magic, presentation and speaking skills, character development and stage presentation, focusing on what the students are interested in. Each student is asked to perform a magic effect; either one that they have recently learned, or one that they have performed but would like to improve. The instructors will guide and help them master the presentation of their material. Several members will take turns to teach and work on different disciplines of magic. Students are also given the opportunity to practice performing, enhancing the course experience and training them to project their voices and their performance.

Once ready, each student will be asked to choose a stage routine that they will develop and improve throughout the year, with the goal of performing this routine for a public audience. At the end of the year, the Junior Magicians are invited to perform their routine(s) at a (semi)public performance, using the skills they have used throughout the year. Student Selection Due to the hands-on nature of magic and the limited one-on-one instruction time, only a small number of new students are accepted each year to join the Junior Magic Club. Generally, the traits of a good student in magic include:

• Desire to learn, hopefully having learned a few magic tricks prior to joining the club

• ability to focus and follow step-by-step instructions

• self-confidence and speaking ability

• enthusiasm and a passion for magic

If you or your child are interested in joining, please contact ring183treasurer@gmail.com for an invitation to our next meeting. At the meeting we will assess their skills and fit and contact you shortly after if we feel we can accept them into the club. If a student is not accepted, we do encourage them to re-apply the following year, as all the above skills increase dramatically during every child’s development.
